End of the Week Mock

I think once the Steelers get to pick 18, I think all the great players will be gone. All the elite OTs will be gone, and I see this is the year to get more value in an extremely deep draft.

I see the Steelers resigning Casey Hampton, Ryan Clark, Jeff Reed, and Nick Eason. I also see them tendering Willie Colon, William Gay, Daniel Sepulveda, and Matt Spaeth.

The Steelers should also receive two 5th round compensation picks, as well as a 7th according to compensation expert AdamTJ13. Check out his blog at: http://adamjt13.blogspot.com/

The Steelers select 18th, but trade down with Dallas at 27 and also receive their 3rd round pick(91).

1. G Mike Iupati, Idaho
A few of you must think I am crazy to slot him here of all places. I disagree. While the massive Idaho product showed that he is a run blocking beast, he needs to improve in pass protection. The league has developed into a passing league. If you cannot protect your QB, your stock will fall. Iupati showed some struggles in the one-on-one drills and allowed defenders to get into his frame at the Senior Bowl, and that pushes him down this far.

2. S Chad Jones, LSU
Another guy who could go sooner just happens to fall. Jones is an imposing safety with great size and athleticism. He has good hands, is strong against the run, and good in coverage.  Also has excellent closing speed, and can really lay the wood when the opportunity presents itself.

3. NT Cam Thomas, North Carolina
While Thomas had an inconsistent season, he really improved his draft stock at the Senior Bowl. His massive and wide frame make him very hard to move in the middle. He commands double teams, is super strong against the run, and can even rush and collapse the pocket. Incredible bull rush and rip moves.

3. OLB Austen Lane, Murray State
While he is small school product, he showed he could play with the big boys at the Senior Bowl. Lane has amazing size and athleticism. His speed is insane for someone of his size. He should be a hell of special teamer while being a decent depth option and situational pass rusher.

4. DE Alex Carrington, Arkansas State
Carrington looked good this past week at the Senior Bowl and showed that he could be a 34 DE. He has good, lower body strength and showed the ability to shed blocks and make plays across the line and in pursuit. He lives making plays in opponents backfields, and he is an accomplished pass rusher.

5. CB Walther Thurmond, Oregon
Thurmond only played in 4 games all year long. However, playing injured last season he registered 66 tackles, five picks, and eight passes broken up. He is super talented. If he can ever get healthy, he could be one hell of a player.

5c. CB Chris Chancellor, Clemson
Chancellor has shown flashes of being a shutdown CB. He is super fast and has excellent closing speed, great hands, and is very good in coverage. Needs to visit the weight room to get some more strength so he can compete with the more physical WRs of the NFL.

5c. RB Joique Bell, Wayne State
Bell rushed for over 2,000 yards last season. Wow. He good size at 5'11" 223lbs, and can run a mid 4.5. He showed last week that he can play with the big boys, and I think he could be a very good goal line back and solid backup to Mendenhall.

6. WR Marcus Easley, Connecticut
You know this guy is going to work hard - he was a walk-on and had just five receptions entering the year. As a senior, he logged 48 catches for 893 yards and eight touchdowns. This sounds like the classic Steelers type of player.

7. WR/RB/RS Trindon Holliday, LSU
Holliday would have been the Dexter McCluster of LSU if LSU actually had a QB. He is super fast and seems impossible to catch. World class speedster, he should provide a huge offensive spark. This guy should replace Stefan Logan.

7c. ILB Josh Hull, Penn State
Hull is an underrated linebacker from an excellent program. He is a solid tackler, takes good angles, and has excellent strength. He also possesses good speed. He could surprise a lot of people and be one heck of a ILB for the Steelers.

A Dual Trade Mock

This is not going to be an in-depth analysis mock. This is more of a mock that I will be interested to get peoples' take on. Here I go:

Steelers resign Hampton, Clark, Reed, Townsend, Eason. The lone free agent the Steelers bring in is RB Leon Washington. RFA tender Colon, Gay, Sepulveda, Spaeth.

Steelers get two 5ths and one 7th round pick as compensation for free agent losses.

Steelers select 18th. Steelers then package their 2nd, 3rd, and 7th picks to move up with Philadelphia at pick 24 and then gain pick 87.

1. OG Mike Iupati, Idaho
1. DE Jared Odrick, Penn State
3. NT Cam Thomas, North Carolina
4. OT Ciron Black, LSU
5. FS Robert Johnson, Utah
5c. CB Chris Chancellor, Clemson
5c. OLB Arthur Moats, James Madison
6. TE Nate Byham, Pittsburgh
7c. OLB O'Brien Schofield, Wisconsin

3.OT Ciron Black, LSU
4. NT Cam Thomas, North Carolina
5. S Harry Coleman, LSU
5c. CB Chris Chancellor, Clemson
5c. OLB Arthur Moats, James Madison
6. TE Nate Byham, Pittsburgh

7c. OLB O'Brien Schofield, Wisconsin

OL thoughts:
This area is addressed early with Iupati and Black. They are both good run and pass blockers. It is not only essential to run the ball better....but also protect Big Ben better. Iupati still could use some work in pass protection.....but I view Iupati as our LG of the future and Black as the RT of the future.

DL thoughts:
This area is also addressed early with Odrick and Thomas. Both are tearing up at the Senior Bowl. Odrick has potential to be the second coming of Aaron Smith. Thomas is the big run stuffer than can train behind Hampton until he is ready to take over.

Secondary thoughts:
Addressed later with Coleman and Chancellor. Good potential CB and S prospects. Would have been addressed earlierbut Odrick presented better value.

OLB thoughts:
I thought Moats would present value for this next season. Then, when Schofield is ready.....he can start contributing. He had tons of potential before his injury....if he can return to form he is worth the pick.

TE thoughts:
Byham is a Miller clone. He could really surprise us with his potential.

Roster shakes out like this:

QB/ Roethlisberger, Dixon, Batch
RB/ Mendenhall, Moore, Washington
TE/ Miller, Spaeth, Byham, Johnson
WR/ Ward, Holmes, Wallace, Sweed, Logan
OL/ Starks, Kemoeatu, Hartwig, Foster, Colon, Iupati, Black, Legursky, Foster
DL/ Smith, Hampton, Keisel, Hood, Odrick, Thomas, Eason
LB/ Harrison, Woodley, Timmons, Farrior, Fox, Frazier, Bailey, Moats
CB/ Taylor, Gay, Townsend, Burnett, Lewis, Madison
DB/ Polamalu, Clark, Mundy, Carter
ST/ Reed, Sepulveda, Warren/Retkofsky
IR/ Schofield

Practice squad shapes out like this:

DE Harris
DT McClendon
CB Chancellor
S Coleman
T Hills
WR Grisham
WR Chery
RB Redmen

The Can't Miss Prospects at the Senior Bowl

There are a few prospects that I would just kill to have this year from the Senior Bowl:

DE Jared Odrick, Penn State
Odrick has been a force all week. He has excelled in the individuals drills. He has shown he can rush the passer and hold his own against the run. He has very good hand use. More importantly, he has all the tools necessary to be a dominant 5 technique DE for the Steelers. Sure we have Aaron Smith, Brett Keisel, and Ziggy Hood...but DEs are what makes the 34 defense work.

OL Mike Iupati, Idaho
Iupati has also made his presence known throughout the week. He has been a monster in the run game, dominating everyone he has gone up against. While he needs some work in pass protection, he even has the potential to kick out to OT. One of the talking draft heads said he can play every spot on the line as well. Scouts present have said that he looks like a ten year Pro Bowl caliber player. This line needs a dominant presense, and his ability to play all the line spots makes him super attractive.

OLB Brandon Graham, Michigan
Graham has been the most dominating defender at the Senior Bowl. He has super quick first step, complemented well by exceptional strength and good speed. He is relentless, and is a clone of LaMarr Woodley. I would kill for this team to have another LaMarr Woodley.

CB Kyle Wilson, Boise State
Wilson has excellent timed and closing speed, is exceptional is coverage, and has great hands. He the makings of a true lockdown CB. The Steelers need another CB who can step in soon and start. I also love his "take on the world" mentality.

Senior Bowl Week Mock

Steelers resign(or franchise/transition) Hampton, Clark, Reed, and Eason. RFA tender Colon, Gay, Sepulveda, Spaeth.

Steelers receive two 5ths and one 7th round compensation pick.

Steelers select 18th. Steelers trade down with Green Bay and receive pick 23 and 86.

1. G Mike Iupati, Idaho
He has been dominating all week at the Senior Bowl and shows that he is even a candidate to move out to tackle. Some draft guy said this is the best G he has seen in two years. He mauler, plays until the whistle blows, and is a blue collar player. Someone also said he could play all five spots on the line too. This just seems like the can't miss prospect for the Steelers this season.

2. S Chad Jones, LSU
Jones is young and only has one year of starting experience, but he has shown that he is very athletic and has the range to play either safety spot. He will have time to learn behind Clark, so getting an impact safety is a must.

3. OLB Austen Lane, Murray State
I have been lucky to see him play in person. A friend of mine has a brother on the team. Went down with him once to see him play. Wow. He is super athletic and is a down right dominating pass rusher. This guy will get an extremely hard look by the Steelers. If he shows the ability to stand up and still play at the same level......watch out.

3. OT Rodger Saffold, Indiana
Saffold is a player that improved his stock immensely at the East/West Shrine game and practices. Saffold uses excellent technique, leverage, and footwork to mirror and shield his opponents away. In addition, he plays to the whistle and finishes his blocks. In addition, Saffold has room to bulk up and not lose his quicks. Getting bifger will also help his already solid run blocking. There is no OT depth right now, so adding one in the draft is a must.

4. TE Colin Peek, Alabama
Peek is an excellent blocker. He has sure hands and runs crisp routes. We need a better TE than Matt Spaeth blocking on the edge for the Steelers. Peek brings that and so much more to the game with his presence. He is just rock solid in all aspects of the game.

5. NT Boo Robinson, Wake Forest
Robinson is an old favorite of mine. While he doesn't have bulk at the moment, he has played as large as 350lbs and 322lbs. He lost even more to fit in with the scheme they ran this year. This is what I know he can do: he anchors well and does well versus double teams, has a good motor, has decent technique, and is very athletic for his stout frame. He reminds me a young, Joel Steed with two healthy knees.

5c. CB Chris Chancellor, Clemson
Chancellor was overshadowed by teammate Crezdon Butler for most of his career as a Clemson Tiger. However, he really improved his stock at the East/West Shrine game and practices. He has excellent timed and closing speed, possesses good hands, and is very good in coverage. While he needs to add some bulk to his frame, he shows glimpses of being a lockdown CB at the next level.

5c. WR Freddie Barnes, Bowling Green
What he did this past year was incredible. He posted 155 catches. That is down right astounding. While he had trouble getting open in drills at the East/West Shrine practices....when gametime came he just got open. I can't explain it......but if you looked at Hines Ward right now, whether your a Steelers fan or not....you could say the exact same thing about him. And we move Hines around to get a clean release....imagine if we did it for Barnes.....wow. He could be something special....

6. CB Sam Shields, Miami
As 4TA2R pointed out in one of his earlier mocks, Shields played CB out of necessity for the Canes this past season. That makes him an excellent developmental CB at this point. Like 4TA2R said, since he has little experience there. This also means that there are less bad habits to break. He is very fast, has excellent hands, and held his own in coverage this past year.

7. DE Clifton Geathers, South Carolina
He is big and athletic, and shows some promise as a 34DE. He is a decent pass rusher and is solid against the run.

7c. DE Lorenzo Washington, Alabama
Knows and plays in a 34 defense, shouldn't be too much more to learn. Is stout against the run, looked like a decent pass rusher, and has good technique.

Another Trade Down Mock

Resign Hampton, Clark, Reed, Eason. RFA Colon, Gay, Sepulveda, Spaeth.

Fix the Run Game Mock

Steelers resign Hampton, Clark, Reed, Eason. RFA Colon, Gay, Spaeth, Sepulveda.

Pick 18th, receive 4th, 5th, and 7th round compensations picks for McFadden, Washington, Leftwich/Smith.

Steelers trade down with New England and pick up an extra 2nd round. Trading back only four spots will ensure that Bulaga is still available. I can't see New England(Vollmer), Atlanta(Baker), Cincinnati(Smith), and Houston(Brown) already have young tackles looking to have promising careers take yet another tackle. The wildcard could be Green Bay, who could trade up and take him. However, other options for them such as Bruce Campbell and Charles Brown.....and McCarthy and Thompson love to take the BPA. New England trades up to get Jerry Hughes of TCU because Atlanta, Houston, and Cincinnati all could use a pass rushing threat.

1. OT Bryan Bulaga, Iowa
2. S Chad Jones, LSU
2. OLB Ricky Sapp, Clemson
3. CB Amari Spievey, Iowa

My Favorite Mock so Far

Steelers resign Hampton, Clark, Reed, Eason. RFA Colon, Gay, Spaeth, Sepulveda.

Pick 18th, receive 4th, 5th, and 7th round compensations picks for McFadden, Washington, Leftwich/Smith.

(1)18. Bryan Bulaga
Pick is simple. He is the best player here. Colon is only an RFA, and there is no proven depth whatsoever outside of the starting RG Trai Essex. Outstanding pass protector, and is excellent in the run game. Very athletic as well. Also, with new OL Sean Kugler, he is going to want some good OL to work with.

(2)50. FS Chad Jones, LSU
Is a fluid safey. He can turn his hips and run with most in the NFL. He has excellent hands, has great closing speed, and really punishes people with every tackle.

(3)82. CB Kyle Wilson, Boise State
Four year starter, and the hype has always been there. Excellent cover CB, great hands, and has a take on the world type of attitude. Love to see this guy as a Steeler. He even offers extra value as a solid return man.

(4)118. TE Colin Peek, Alabama
He is an excellent all-around TE. He is a good if not very good blocker and possesses excellent hands. Great route runner.

(4)133. ILB Micah Johnson, Kentucky
I am convinced that Johnson is going to be absent for the Combine. He will need a his Pro-Day to be big in order for him to raise his stock. Johnson is a great player and athlete, but ILBs typically fall on draft day, and I think he falls here. He is strong and stout against the run, is a good tackler, and is ever underrated in coverage.

(5)154.OT Jared Veldheer, Hillsdale
Make no mistake, Sean Kugler made the ultra-athletic Jason Peters into a Probowler. He will see the next coming of him in Veldheer. I have written enough about Veldheer.

(5)170. SS Andrew Sendejo, Rice
Another guy who I think will be a very good player for the Steelers. I have written enough about Sendejo. Safe to say I could be his biggest fan....

(6)191. OLB Arthur Moats, James Madison
Super athletic player. Good against the run, relentless pass rusher with a non-stop motor, and can drop into coverage.

(7)227. DE Lorenzo Washington, Alabama
He already plays in a prostyle 34 defense, he will look attractive this late.

(7)244. OLB Adrain Tracy, William & Mary
Has had a productive career amd comes from Tomlin's alma mater.

Steelers Hire Former Bill's OL Coach

According to Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, the Steelers have hired former Bill's OL Coach Sean Kugler.

I personally like the hire a lot. He helped coach LT Jason Peters to his first two Probowls, and set a team record of only 26 sacks allowed in 2007. In addition, he has always had a very good screen game. He is young and fiery, and will get his OL to play with passion....something this line lacks all together.

Mock of the Day- The Elite are Gone

Resign Hampton, Clark, Reed, Townsend, Eason. RFA Colon, Gay, Spaeth, Sepulveda.

Steelers select 18th. Since there are no elite OTs in Round 1, and Earl Thomas is gone, though Taylor Mays is not....anyways the Steelers trade down with Dallas for their 1st, 2nd, and 4th.

Steelers receive two 5th round compensations for McFadden and Washington, and a 7th for Smith and Leftwich.

1. S Chad Jones, LSU
Jones is a very athletic safety who can open his hips and run with the best in the NFL. He has good hands, is good in coverage, and his closing speed in exceptional. He is a good tackler, and he can really lay the wood and punish receiver over the middle.

2. OLB Ricky Sapp, Clemson
He is the perfect hybrid player we have been looking for: he is 6'4", 248lbs, and runs a low 4.62. He is a athletic freak rushing the passer, and has played standing up a majority of his career.

2.CB Dominique Franks, Oklahoma
Franks possesses excellent frame and measurables at 6'0" 190lbs 4.46. He can run with the best and has excellent hands. More than willing to help out against the run.

3. ILB Micah Johnson, KentuckyJohnson has played great football over the years, but his current knee injury(MCL) may keep him inactive at the Combine and postseason bowl games. He is a very good tackler, is stout against the run, possess very good strength, stout against the run, and is underrated in coverage.

4. RB Ben Tate, Auburn
The classic downhill runner who has really ran hard the past year, gaining over 1,300 yards and 10 TDs. He is even a good receiving threat in the flats and is shift and elusive when he has the ball. He is also extremely hard to tackle at 220lbs. He should be able to spell Mendenhall throughout the season.

4. TE Colin Peek, Alabma
He is a dual threat. He is a very accomplished blocking, and he also has excellent hands and shows the ability to get open in coverage. Very good route runner too.

4. OT Jared Veldheer, HillsdaleVeldheer is a bit of an unknown at this point. Veldheer is currently training with former 13 year veteran and All Pro Brad Hopkins, who has raved that he is the most athletic linemen he has ever seen. He also did not have a strength of conditioning program at Hillsdale, so he could easily gain 10-15lbs without losing any quickness or mobility. He is exceptional in pass protection, and he is a solid run blocker. The big question is whether he can play with the big boys at the next level. I wonder how people missed on this guy......his potential seems endless.

5. WR Freddie Barnes, Bowling Green
Barnes is one hell of a player, rather his game translates to the NFL is another matter. He set NCAA records this year, with a record of 155 receptions for 1,770 yards and 19 TDs. He is deceptively fast, runs pretty good routes, and possess game breaking ability. Once again though, the major question is whether his game translates to the NFL. Why did he go so unnoticed if he is/was such an elite talent? He is also insurance just in case Sweed doesn't pan out.....I have high hopes for Sweed......this coaching staff has not given Sweed opportunities.....they never have....throwing the ball once his way is not a way to build Sweed's confidence....I pray that the Steelers give him an ample opportunity at camp to show what he can do.

5c. DE Doug Worthington, Ohio State
Super big and very athletic. Reminds of younger versions of Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel. After some time in the system, I think Washington could be a stud. He is a good pass rusher and very stout in the run game.

6. SS Andrew Sendejo, Rice
Incredibly high football IQ. Sendejo is strong against the run, is a very good tackler, is more than solid in coverage, and has very good hands. Excellent football player.

7. CB Walter McFadden, Auburn
After a good if not spectacular bowl game, his heroics: 2 INTs one returned 100 yards for a TD, 2 passes defensed, and 9 tackles will get him drafted.

7c. DE Lorenzo Washington, Alabama
Washington already plays in Alabama's prostyle 34 defense, so getting a DE that wouldn't have to learn so much on the fly might be a good idea. I really like him because he used his hands very well in the BCS Championship game. Could be another gem this late.

Mock of the Day

Resign Hamtpon, Clark, Reed, Eason, Townsend. RFA Colon, Gay, Spaeth, Sepulveda.

Steelers select 18th, receive compensation picks for McFadden(4th), Washington(5th), and Leftwich(6th).

1. OT Bryan Bulaga
The reality is that the Pittsburgh Steelers are finally able to get that coveted OT they have been desperate to get since 2007. Bulaga is the prototypical OT: big frame at 6'6" 315lbs, very athletic, and is exceptional is pass protection as well as in the run game. Bulaga will start his career at RT and will probably replace Starks when his contract is up.

2. FS Reshad Jones, Georgia
Jones has the athleticism to play both safety spots. He is exceptional against the run, can run and cover with the best, and can make plays on the ball in the air. Big need since the Steelers have no good backup safeties on their roster.

3. CB Kyle Wilson, Boise State
Wilson is one hell of an athlete. He is 5'10" 190lbs who just happens run a 4.40 in the 40. Also, he is considered to be one of the few CBs in this draft who could have shutdown material. Wilson is a ball hawk, is excellent in man to man coverage, and can run with the fastest in the NFL. He is also more than willing to help against the run and is a solid tackler. Even more impressive, he is an accomplished return man for the Broncos.

4. RB Ben Tate, Auburn
Tate has ran hard all year long, as his 1,362 yards and 10 TDs would suggest. Tate also has a chance to run in the 4.4s at the combine. Tate is one of the few complete RBs that could be special at the next level.

4c. TE Colin Peek, Alabama
Peek is an excellent blocker for the Crimson Tide. Has aided the whole stable of RBs, including Heisman winner Mark Ingram, have excellent runs bounced to the outside. He can also be used as a dual threat, he is a solid receiver.

5. OT Jared Veldheer, Hillsdale
Some may question this pick since the Steelers took Bulaga in the 1st round. Here is my thought: Colon is not signed beyond 2010(and not even for the 2010 season currently). If Colon feels like he is above a 2nd year RFA tender, we are in serious trouble here. Hills has shown nothing so far, and there is no one behind him. Veldheer would be incredible value here. He is super athletic, has an imposing frame at 6'9" 320lbs, and his potential has not even been tapped. At Hillsdale, they do not have a strength and conditioning program. He is now working with former 13 year veteran and All-Pro Brad Hopkins. Imagine this kid if filled out even more. He could be the most athletic 340lb man ever.

5c. OLB Antonio Coleman, Auburn He is a very good pass rusher, and is even good in coverage. Is not the fastest player, but he really can get after the QB. He is a very good tackler. Rarely do you see him miss or fail to make a tackle.

6. DE Brandon Deadrick, AlabamaDeadrick is stout against the run, offers value rushing the passer, and his long arms and technique make him very hard to block.
6c. ILB Josh Hull, Penn State Hull has had a monster season. He has 116 tackles, 8.5 for a loss. He is a tackling machine. He is solid in run support and coverage.

7. SS Andrew Sendejo, Rice My gut tells me this kid is going to be an excellent pro for the the Steelers. He is a tackling machine, is very strong against the run, has excellent hands, and can help provide cover over the top. He even possesses decent speed at his frame of 6'2" 216lbs. He will be a steal for the team that decides to take a risk on him.

Trade Up Mock

This is the first ever trade up mock I have ever done. I have always been of the mind and thought that stand pat at your selection and pick, or trade down and get more picks. I figured I would try a new scenario here.

First of all, 2010 will mark an uncapped season. In other words, there will be no spending limit. This should thrill Redskins Owner Dan Snyder, who has a record of going after the top free agents and paying them way too much for their services. If you ask the average Steelers fan, he or she could tell you that rarely do the Pittsburgh Steelers sign a big name free agent because they are unwilling to shell out big bucks in an ever increasing market. That would be true. He or she could also tell you that the Steelers rather look to their own free agents and spend money on them, then look to smaller free agents to come in and complete the team. That would also be correct. What they probably wouldn't tell you that the Pittsburgh Steelers have been in the top 8 NFL payroll for the past four seasons. In an uncapped year, they could spend all the money they want. They have made the right move by selling bits of their stock to big time investors. With all of this cash, it is silly to think that the Steelers will not make good deals to most of the free agents they evaluate and wish to keep. They could even break tradition and shell out decent money to a free agent. Ultimately, the Pittsburgh Steelers should have plenty of cash to spend, especially when you consider that Casey Hamtpon, Ryan Clark, Willie Parker, Deshea Townsend, Jeff Reed, Willie Colon, Nick Eason, Travis Kirschke, Matt Spaeth, Daniel Sepulveda, William Gay, and past Steelers Larry Foote and Kendall Simmons all come off the books, clearing up a considerable amount of cash.

This is what I believe will happen in free agency:

Casey Hampton- Gets either tagged or resigned.
Ryan Clark- Gets resigned.
Willie Parker- Walks because he wants a starting gig.
Deshea Townsend- Gets resigned for peanuts.
Jeff Reed- Gets either tagged or resigned.
Willie Colon- Will be an RFA, will receive his tender.
Nick Eason- Gets resigned for peanuts.
Travis Kirschke- My opinion is that he retires. If not he can be bought for little, if the Steelers even want him anymore.
Matt Spaeth- Will be an RFA, will receive his tender.
Daniel Sepulveda- Will be an RFA, will receive his tender.
William Gay- Will be an RFA, will receive his tender.

There is also talk of maybe extending whose contract still will have one year left such as Santonio Holmes, LaMarr Woodley, or Willie Colon(not my vote).

Steelers trade up with the Jaguars at pick 10. Steelers forfeit their 1st(18th) and 2nd(50th) selections. Using the value board, the trade matches the 10th pick at 1300 points to the 18th at 950 points and 50th at 400 points.

1. ILB Rolando McClain, Alabama
3. CB Kareem Jackson, Alabama
4. OT Jared Veldheer, Hillsdale
4c. OLB O'Brien Schofield, Wisconsin
5. FS Ahmad Black, Florida
5c. DE Alex Carrington, Arkansas State
6. NT Kade Weston, Georgia
6c. SS Andrew Sendejo, Rice
7. RB Roy Upchurch, Alabama

If There was Only One Player the Steelers could Draft.....

...it would be the ILB for the Alabama Crimson Tide, Rolando McClain. He is the best defender in this draft, hands down. The only one who can even compare is Ndakumong Suh. There are so many aspects to his game, work ethic, and love for the game that would make him the perfect Pittsburgh Steeler. Here are a few reasons why I think he is the can't miss prospect in this draft:

1. McClain is an physical and athletic freak. He is 6'4", 256lbs. He can also fly: he has clocked an average of 4.65 in the 40 yard dash. He track players down in pursuit. He can make plays from sideline to sideline. He is as strong as an ox. He also closes extremely quick and makes his presence be known. Rarely can you find a player like McClain, who has the perfect blend to make a future All-Pro Linebacker.

2. He is an elite playmaker. As mentioned above, he is an incredible athlete. However, tons of guys have athleticism yet can't yield results. McClain is quite the opposite. McClain is a beast. McClain is the prototype ILB. He is a phenomenal tackling machine; rarely do you see anyone break out of a Rolando McClain tackle. Not only can he tackle, he can cover exceptionally well. The other night in the BCS Championship, I saw not only drop into coverage on multiple occasions, but he could keep up with Texas' very athletic TEs and slot WRs. In addition, he is also very good at rushing the passer. There were a few times the interior offensive linemen for the Longhorns were getting manhandled and blown up by McClain. Another feature that I liked in McClain was his ability to take on blockers, and then abruptly shed them and make tackles. On the few times that Texas did run the ball, McClain routinely got off his blocker and got around the play. His gameplay makes me go crazy. This year alone he has accumulated 105 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 2 interceptions, one forced fumble, and 4 passed defensed. WOW. Here is an excerpt from the ESPN NFL Draft Blog based on his performance of in the BCS National Championship game:

"Alabama ILB Rolando McClain also continued to impress with his overall game. McClain's imposing size (6-3½, 245), superior instincts and recognition skills and his unquestioned leadership make him the complete package. He gets his teammates in position and plays with the kind of passion teams want from inside linebackers.

McClain put his instincts on display on a third-down screen pass late in the first quarter, dropping initially but getting downhill as soon as he saw the running back turning back for the ball. He then took a great angle to the ball and exploded into RB Tre' Newton, stopping Newton for a loss and snuffing out a drive deep in Texas territory. He also made another big third-down play later in the game, dropping into underneath middle coverage, recognizing the angle route coming across the field and getting his hands on the ball and nearly intercepting it.

McClain also did a great job scraping down the line and making plays in the running game and he showed outstanding power as a blitzer. He timed up a blitz at one point and stunted inside, flat-out running over the guard and getting enough pressure to force and errant pass. McClain does not have blazing speed but makes up for it with instincts and angles, and while his 40-yard dash time might have something to say about where he's drafted the film doesn't lie and it shows a mid-first round prospect."

3. He is a leader on the field. The man is the Team Captain of the defense. Countless times, all year long, he is lining his teammates up in the right positions. He can be seen making audibles. He know his defense, and can adjust on the fly. Doing this all at the age of 20 is amazing and impressive.

4. He plays this game with all his heart and would rather die than sit on the sidelines. Here is yet another excerpt from the ESPN NFL Draft Blog:

"McClain (No. 6) played well despite a lingering bout with the stomach flu. The Tuscaloosa News reported that McClain planned on playing regardless of how he felt:

"To get onto the field, McClain had to be hydrated with two intravenous injections before the game. At halftime, he had another.

"'My team needed me,' McClain said. 'They needed me to be a leader and out there. I couldn't let them see that I was sick. I couldn't let them see that I wasn't 100 percent. For them, I'd do anything. I love them.'"

This tells me all I need to know. He is simply the can't miss prospect in the upcoming draft. I would trade up in an instant if I could to get the ever talented McClain. He is just too dominant and talented to pass up, even if the Steelers would have to trade ten spots up to get McClain. James Farrior clearly regressed in his play, and maybe only has one more year of starting ability left. LBs are the keys to success in a 34 defense. Imagine defense lining up with LaMarr Woodley, Lawrence Timmons, James Harrison, and then Rolando McClain. That would really give opposing teams nightmares to gameplan against. QBs would be dreaming about these four all night long before gameday.

Mock of the Day

Resign Hampton, Clark, Reed, Eason, Townsend. RFA Colon, Gay, Spaeth, Sepulveda.

Steelers select 18th, receive compensation picks for McFadden(4th), Washington(5th), and Leftwich(6th).

1. OT Byran Bulaga, Iowa
He can be the dominating presence that the Steelers lack on the OL. He will replace Colon by 2011(if not sooner), and can replace Starks when he is ready to call it quits. He is an excellent run blocker and pass protector, and plays with excellent leverage.

2. CB Kareem Jackson, Alabama
Jackson is a complete CB. He can run with the best, is very good in coverage, and has excellent hands. He is a more than willing tackler as well. Jackson can come in and challenge for a starting position.

3. S Reshad Jones, Georgia
Jones can play either safety spot, something that brings a lot of value to the Steelers....who have two terrible backups. He is good in coverage, has good hands, and has the speed to keep up with the better receivers in the NFL. Jones also is very good against the run and a solid tackler.

4. ILB Micah Johnson, Kentucky
Johnson is good at a lot of things: good tackler, good in space, good rushing the passer. He is stout against the run and can take on OL. Can shed blockers well too. His pass coverage is very underrated. In short, he can be a starter down the road and replace Farrior.

4c. DE Alex Carrington, Arkansas State
Carrington had a drop off in production this past year, but he is still a prospect that should draw considerable interest. When you can run a 4.78 at 280lbs, you are going to get noticed. Carrington is very stout against the run and can rush the passer. Carrington reminds me a lot of Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel build-wise....and then they became stellar 34 ends...

5. TE Colin Peek, Alabamar
Peek is one of my favorite TEs in this draft. He is a dual threat: he is a good blocker and a solid receiving option.....something that Matt Spaeth doesn't offer. Peek could go higher, but I expect him to be here.

5c. RB Chris Brown, Oklahoma
With Parker gone, a RB will be drafted. Brown is a good option here. He runs hard and has excellent hands.

6. OLB Arthur Moats, James Madison
An athletic freak of nature. His coaches rave how much of a complete player he has become: he terrorizes the QB, he is stout against the run, and he can drop into coverage. Sounds like our late round developmental OLB project to me.

6c. OT Jared Veldheer, Hillsdale
Another small school player who should start shooting up draft boards. Veldheer is extremely athletic, and is now training with former All Pro Brad Hopkins. Hopkins raves about his athleticism, and how athletic he is. Hillsdale did not have a strength and conditioning program, and Hopkins thinks he could easily add 15lbs of muscle and not lose any quickness.

7. OLB Adrian Tracy, William & Mary
Another developmental OLB. Already has the size, and he has been a solid player for Tomlin's alma mater.

BCS National Chamionship Prospects

There are so many prospects in this Championship that it will make your head spin.

Let us start with the Big 12 Champions, the Texas Longhorns:

QB Colt McCoy
WR Jordan Shipley
WR Malcolm Williams
OT Adam Ulatowski
DT Lamarr Houston
LB Sergio Kindle
LB Rod Muckleroy
FS Earl Thomas

Next, the SEC Champion Alabama Crimson Tide:

TE Colin Peek
G Mike Johnson
NT Terrence "Mount" Cody
DE Brandon Deadrick
LB Rolando McClain
CB Javier Arenas
CB Kareem Jackson
SS Justin Woodall
PK Leigh Tiffin

This game is loaded. I will tell you already that I do not like Kindle, Ulatowski, Houston, or Muckleroy for the Steelers. Kindle and Muckleroy are undersized and not good against the run, Houston tries hard but will never be a 34 DE, and Ulatowski is athletically limited in what he can do, despite his impressive frame of 6'8" 300lbs. I do however like all the Alabama prospects listed.

Two More Declare

The following underclassmen have elected to forgo their senior season and enter the 2010 NFL Draft:

DE Jason Worilds, Virginia Tech- http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft10/news/story?id=4805813

QB Jevan Snead, Ole Miss- http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft10/news/story?id=4805195

Mock of the Day

Resign the following free agents:

Casey Hampton- Doesn't matter how we do it: tag or sign him to a 4 year deal. It is a must on a team with too many other holes. He wants to be here, he has said it all year long.
Ryan Clark- Wants to be here. He doesn't want it to end this way. Give him a 3 year deal. Once again, this team needs him. This team has bigger holes elsewhere.
Jeff Reed- Despite his attempts on kickoffs, he is automatic. Must resign for a team that has bigger holes elsewhere.
Nick Eason- He gives 110% on every play, and is solid depth. Give this man a 3 year deal. Can get him for peanuts.
Deshea Townsend- Small 2 year deal. Very cap friendly.

Steelers receive a 4th, 5th, and 6th round compensation picks for Bryant McFadden, Nate Washington, and Byron Leftwich.

Steelers select 18th. However, they trade back with Philly at pick 27 to pick up their 1st, 3rd, and 4th round pick. The value is pretty sound, only comes out with Pittsburgh being a little more than 100 points ahead in this one.

1. OT Anthony Davis, Rutgers
Okung, Williams, Campbell, and Bulaga are all gone. Davis is available. Colon is just terrible, and an upgrade is needed. Davis falls due to some baggage, in addition to a few teams only viewing him as a RT.

2. CB Kareem Jackson, Alabama
Jackson has good value here. Jackson is one of the better CBs in this year's class. He has good hands, can run and cover with the best, is a very good in run support. Very good open field tackler. One of the several CBs who could come to a team and possibly start.

3. NT Jerrell Powe, Ole Miss
Powe looked like a young Casey Hampton in the Cotton Bowl versus Oklahoma State. Commanded double teams, put pressure on the QB up the middle, and allowed for no running lanes to be opened anywhere near him. I really like his first step. Very quick and powerful. He is also very athletic for a big man at 6'2" 340lbs. He stayed on the field a lot longer than Hampton would have. Perfect guy to train under Hampton.

3. FS Major Wright, Florida
Wright is one of the many safeties I like in this year's draft class. Wright is very instinctive. A few times in the Sugar Bowl he hit a player right as they were catching the ball. Wright is very good in coverage, has excellent timed and closing speed, and has very good hands. He can also deliver the knockout punch like Ryan Clark has done for us.

4. RB Ben Tate, Auburn
Tate runs very hard. He runs through people. Tate is a complete back: he is a very accomplished runner, has excellent hands, and is a solid blocker. His physicality and downhill abilities will give us a solid RB to spell Mendenhall when he needs a break.

4. ILB Micah Johnson, Kentucky
Johnson is very impressive. He is a thumper, yet he is athletic and underrated in coverage. He is even a good pass rushing threat up the middle. Reminds me a lot of Larry Foote, except more athletic.

4c. OLB O'Brien Schofield, Wisconsin
Schofield is impressive at a lot of things: he is a terror rushing the QB, is stout against the run, and drops into coverage fluidly. He is also a very good open field tackler.

5. TE Colin Peek, Alabama
Peek is an excellent two way TE. He is a very good blocker and a very good receiving threat. The Steelers finally get that TE who provides something to OC Bruce Arians that he can actually use on gameday. Good-bye Matt Spaeth. A lacking of time in the 40 yard dash will drop him here.

5c. DE Doug Worthington, Ohio State
Worthington impressed me against Oregon with his nonstop motor. He is also a very athletic. Very stout against the run, and is a good pass rusher.

6. SS Andrew Sendejo, Rice
Rice will go overlooked by many, I think. Sendejo is an excellent tackler, has very good hands, is strong against the run. He also does a good job in coverage. Sendejo could be a steal in this draft.

6c. OLB Arthur Moats, James Madison
Madison is a freak of nature. He is a relentless pass rusher, is stout against the run, and has experience dropping back into coverage. Another good project pass rusher.

7. NT Ekom Udofia, Standford
Major reason why Stanford played at a high level this past season. Stout against the run, and is a good as pick as anybody this late.

Three More Juniors Declare

The following underclassmen have now declared eligible for the NFL Draft:

OT Bryan Bulaga, Iowa

DE Jason Pierre-Paul, South Florida

CB Dominique Franks, Oklahoma

Status of Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arains Uncertain

At first, Ken Laird of ESPN Radio 1250 Pittsburgh, announced on his radio show today that Bruce Arains has been fired, and if not, will be fired within the week.

Then, well known Pittsburgh beat sports writer has said that two of his sources have said that the ownership and new investors want Arians out. His third source has said that Arians himself started the rumor. The underlying problem is that once again the front office and the coaching staff does not see eye-to-eye.

However, the incumbent Arians has not been fired, and has never heard of anything of the matter.

Be back with more in the morning.....hopefully with some answers.

Ken Anderson Retires

The Pittsburgh Steelers QB Coach, Ken Anderson, announced his retirement.

Anderson enjoyed a fruitful NFL career. Anderson was drafted by tthe Cincinnati Bengals with their 3rd round pick in the 1971 NFL Draft. Anderson played QB for the Bengals from 1971-1986. Below include his top accolades:
* 4× Pro Bowl selection (1975, 1976, 1981, 1982)
* 1× First-team All-Pro selection (1981)
* 2× Second-team All-Pro selection (1974, 1975)
* 1981 NFL MVP
* 1981 PFWA NFL MVP
* 1981 NEA NFL MVP
* 1981 NFL Offensive Player of the Year
* 1981 Bert Bell Award
* 1981 NFL Comeback Player of the Year
* Led NFL in passing yards in 1974 with 2,667
* Led NFL in passing yards in 1975 with 3,169
TD-INT 197-160
Yards 32,838

Anderson re-joined the Bengals in 1993 as their quarterbacks coach, a position he held until 1996. After that, he served as the team's offensive coordinator from 1996-2000, and then again as the team's quarterbacks coach in 2001 and 2002. In 2003 he became a wide receivers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and was their quarterbacks coach. He was fired after the 2006 8-8 season along with the offensive coordinator Carl Smith and special teams coach Pete Rodriguez by Jack Del Rio. In January 2007, new Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin hired Anderson as his quarterbacks coach under offensive coordinator. On January 5, 2010, Mike Tomlin announced that Anderson would be retiring, effective immediately[2][3]. Anderson earned a Super Bowl ring when the Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII.

Enjoy retirement!

A Disappointing End to a Season Full of Promise

Despite the Steelers winning their game versus the Miami Dolphins today, the stars did not align and the Pittsburgh Steelers will once again not make the playoffs after winning the Superbowl.

This season was full of promise. However, the Steelers only sputtered through the lofty goal getting back to back championships. This season was full of disappointments:

1. Injuries. The Steelers has two season ending injuries that sidelined Aaron Smith and Troy Polamalu for most of the season. These two players are the best in the business when it comes to what they do for this defense. The lack of their presence killed. Then Ben missed the Baltimore game.

2. Defense. The Steelers came into this season with an elite defense. It never played like one all year long. Gay at CB failed, Smith and Polamalu missed a majority of the season, the entire secondary played like average joes', and pressure was inconsistent. Also, age caught up with James Farrior, Deshea Townsend, and Tyrone Carter.

3. Lack of identity. This was a problem until the last three games of the season. We waffled through the first half of the season with no game plan. In the final three games, we finally gave Ben full control at the steering wheel and let him lead us to three straight victories, one of which was his best performances as a pro.

4. A five-game losing streak. This is the most disappointing in my opinion. We lost to Baltimore and Cincinatti. I can concede to that. However, losing to Kansas City, Oakland, and then Cleveland in a matter of fourteen days was heartbreaking. If one of these would have been a win, the Steelers had the opportunity that the Jets are fighting for tonight: win and your in.

To Steeler Nation, it is only natural to feel pain and disappointment since the Steelers will not get a chance at another Lombardi Trophy. Take comfort in this: we are still the Pittsburgh Steelers, six time world champions. We have more Lombardi Trophies than anyone in the NFL. There is always next season, full of promise and hope.

Long live the Black & Gold!!
